The Recession is Over!
Friday, 26 December 2008 17:58
That's right, it's done. We won't feel it for a while, but believe me it's over, a new dawn will begin in spring of '09

The first recession that I noticed was in the early 1980s, I had just finished my apprenticeship in the U.K. The Thatcher Government delivered shock and awe in overthrowing the socialists and defeating the trade union movement. The long term results were 20 years of prosperity, but the initial shock was brutal

Small Business Customers

Business to business

Let’s talk about a specific type of customer relationship: Business to business. You are the owner or salesperson in a small business. Your prospective customer is a larger business. You provide a product or service to the larger company because they choose not to perform those specific duties themselves. Examples of this type of relationship may be Machine Shop, Sheet metal Company, Soft Goods Manufacturer or anybody in the supply chain, where a larger company buys components, assembles them into some kind of product, sticks their label on it and re sells it.

Multiple Parts on a Tombstone
Sunday, 09 November 2008 09:32

Should you mount the same parts all of the way around the tombstone? That depends on your business, if you run high enough volume on a single part to keep the spindle running for weeks, then the Chick work holding option above would be a good solution, however, if you run a high mix of parts in lower volume and ship JIT, you would be better off running different part numbers on different faces of your tombstone. Here's why:

Productivity: horizontal vs. vertical machining

The simplest way to improve productivity on a vertical machine is to increase the number of parts being machined at one time. We can machine multiple parts in a vise, we can add vises to the machine table, we can make all of the vises multiple vises, and we can even maximize the working surface area by holding a flat plate to the table and machining lots of parts out of a plate.
The main advantage of these methods is that it reduces tool changes, which can reduce cycle time considerably; however there are drawbacks to these methods.

The Horizontal Machining Center
Saturday, 25 October 2008 13:43

The horizontal machining center has the potential for much higher productivity, when compared to a standard 3 axis vertical machining center for several reasons.

Benefits of the Horizontal Machining Center
Monday, 27 October 2008 09:22

There are three main advantages to using a horizontal Machining Center in production.
• The Pallet rotates, allowing for multiple operations
• Typically there are two Pallets, allowing for one Pallet to be loaded while the other is in the cut.
• Gravity allows better chip evacuation from hole and cavity operations, allowing for increased productivity and better tool life.
There is, however an advantage that trumps all others and will enable your Horizontal to perform the Lions share of the mill work in your Shop: Flexibility.

Setup Reduction for CNC Machining Centers

Challenge: Produce a high mix of complex components in low volume, for scheduled JIT delivery

Most companies attempt to meet this challenge by running larger production quantities and then releasing from inventory. This method can be efficient if:
The product is stable (not subject to revision changes.)
The market is stable (not subject to changing demand rates.)
Your company is sufficiently capitalized to hold inventory.
